Dune has a much slower cut rate, and even then the final fight has probably 20 cuts or more and still comes off a bit low-energy as a result of not cutting even more (the age rating prohibiting showing the characters getting superficially cut up probably doesn't help either).Summary: A Swat team arrives at a rundown apartment block with a mission to remove its owner, a notorious drug lord named Tama. WS doesn't always come up on top, with the ScarJo fight scenes feeling particular choppy (since actually jumping on top of someone is probably difficult to get to look natural, and the need to constantly cut between the actual actress and the stunt performer). There's always a contest between editing for scene pacing, and editing so you can get the full effect of the choreography. All done in a single take by Seb Stan.and it's shot with so many surrounding cuts that it still ends up reading like an edit. There's a great bit of choreography where WS blocks, throws his knife in a flip, only to catch the knife with his other hand. The other thought is that fight sequence that takes place near the end in the drug factory portion of the building always gets a laugh out of me when then older dude literally just slams people as his fighting style. Whatever the reason, thank you for the best martial arts/action I’ve ever seen. I think I read somewhere that Evans wanted to do the 2nd movie first, but didn’t have the budget for it so made this movie as sort of a demo to what could be. My second favorite is definitely the brothers versus the Mad Dog at the end. But it didn’t stop there, they went and weaved in fatigue during that fight that made it feel all the more real and added even more tension to the scene. Watching Jaka get overwhelmed in the beginning then lose his cool and start throwing his weight around was something I’d never really seen executed that well in another martial art/action flicks. Watching the Mad Dog slowly move Jaka into the room only to put the gun down and challenge him hand to hand was immaculate. You get your first real look at the Mad Dog and he fights my boy Jaka. Jaka versus the Mad Dog is hands down my favorite fight in that movie. It dug deeper into the action genre and redefined it by doubling down on and expanding what traditional action could be.īoth had their own ways of doing things and I loved both. Which could be good or bad, depending on how much you like violating the genre in different ways.) (But it would be like a rom com where the hero doesn't always get the girl. In some ways, it's an action movie setup with some anti-action movie plot twists, which I absolutely loved. And one of the major evil henchmen's life is actually intentionally spared. And the main character runs out of bullets! This doesn't lead to a fist fight, it leads to running away and hiding. And one of the major fights between Thirby's character and a major villain ends suddenly with barely a fight because of plot and character points. For example, the main bad guy can't be killed using traditional fighting skills because the plot protects her. Important parts of the conflict violate action movie tropes. No, you're right: Dredd is sort of an "anti-action movie in action movie skin" at many points.
